L'œuvre en bref
With Dance, Fernand Léger tackles the theme of collective movement in a bold visual language, the result of his evolution after Cubism. The human figure is no longer fragmented as in his early work, but outlined in thick black contours and integrated into large areas of flat colour. The artist does not describe a specific scene; he organises the bodies according to a visual rhythm, similar to a choreography constructed from lines and surfaces.
Several stylised silhouettes occupy the entire surface. With their arms raised, legs bent and torsos inclined, they suggest action without realistic anatomical detail. The forms are simplified and outlined with a continuous black line. The colours are bold: dark blue, yellow, red, green, and white. Vertical and diagonal bands structure the background. The figures overlap without any perspective depth, creating a compact image where movement is expressed by the intertwining of curved lines and flat areas of colour.
