Gulf of Juan-les-Pins - Raoul Dufy
Excellent
The artwork in a nutshell
This work depicts a view of the Mediterranean coastline, a recurring theme for Raoul Dufy, who found the landscapes of the south a constant source of motif and light. Here he chose a high vantage point, through a central tree, to take in the sea, the hill and the rooftops of the town, dominated by a large pine tree with curving branches in the foreground.
The composition is dominated by a large pine tree with curving branches in the foreground, followed by a red-roofed village, a hill covered with houses, and the gulf alive with sailing boats and barques. The drawing is supple, the shapes simplified and the lines undulating. The palette is based on light blues, transparent greens, ochres and touches of black. The sky, sea and vegetation blend into a fluid harmony. The whole is treated with lightness, almost like a watercolour, capturing a moment of summer calm on the coast.
