In Landscape, Modigliani abandoned portraiture to devote himself to capturing the urban environment, approaching the theme with the same sensitivity that characterises his figurative works. This urban landscape is simplified to the extreme, reduced to essential shapes and evocative colours. Two black trees stand out, contrasting with the warm colour palette of the buildings in the background, and the sky is rendered in broad brushstrokes that suggest a changing atmosphere.
The windows, represented by simple rectangles, punctuate the facades of the buildings and add to the geometry of the composition. There is a tranquillity in this scene, a calm that emanates from the solidity of the ochre walls and the open space of the sky. Modigliani, although better known for his portraits, shows here a mastery of the urban scene, capturing the essence of a moment in the life of the city, frozen in time by his brush.
