L'œuvre en bref
Nicolas de Staël tackles the theme of the elongated body by reducing it to a simple, legible structure in this abstract painting. During this period, he was interested in the human figure without seeking anatomical detail, favouring an approach based on volumes and general lines. The nude became a stable motif, allowing him to work on the balance between surface, colour and material in a refined composition.
The canvas features an elongated shape occupying the central part, evoking a body seen in profile. This light mass, rendered in white and bluish grey, stands out against a uniform red background in the upper part. On the left, a dark area suggests hair. The bottom of the painting is almost entirely white, creating a clear separation between the background and the figure. The brushstrokes are visible, broad and continuous, without precise contours, organising the image through simple contrasts.
