Sainte-Victoire mountain and black castle - Paul Cézanne
Excellent
The artwork in a nutshell
Painted between 1904 and 1906, this painting is a testament to Cézanne's artistic maturity and his transition to a style that would later influence Cubism and modern art. The Montagne Sainte-Victoire, near Aix-en-Provence, is a recurring subject in the artist's work, appearing more than 60 times throughout his career.
The painting offers a striking panorama of the Montagne Sainte-Victoire, which majestically dominates the landscape, with the Château Noir nestling to the left below. The balanced composition features lush Mediterranean vegetation in the foreground. The mountain, powerful and imposing, occupies a large part of the canvas, while the castle blends discreetly into the surrounding landscape. The simplified geometric shapes, the bright colour contrasts and the play of light and shadow give the work a remarkable dynamic and depth.
