Self-portrait with Staline - Frida Kahlo
Excellent
The artwork in a nutshell
In this work, Frida Kahlo is shown standing in front of a monumental portrait of Joseph Stalin, painted in the last years of her life when she had radically embraced communism. The figure of the Soviet leader occupies most of the canvas, almost totally eclipsing the painter herself, who is placed in the background.
Frida is wearing a long skirt and a red shawl, the colour associated with the revolutionary struggle. Her arms are folded, her face closed, and her frozen attitude seems tinged with gravity. The background of the painting is made up of brown and red tones, with a stylised globe in the top right-hand corner. The style is rawer than in his other works, marked by visible brushstrokes and a reduced palette. The ensemble reflects a fusion between ideological commitment and self-representation, with a hierarchical staging in which the cult of the leader takes precedence over personal identity.
