Sun and Life - Frida Kahlo
Excellent
The artwork in a nutshell
In this late work by Frida Kahlo, entitled Sun and Life, the artist continues to explore the fundamental themes that run through all her work: fertility, pain, nature and the cycle of life. Produced at a time when her health was seriously declining, this painting bears witness to a lucid and mystical view of life and death.
The painting is dominated by a group of large, stylized plants with evocative shapes, combining plant and human organs. Their petals seem to open onto scenes of suffering: foetuses, drops of blood, embryonic figures. In the center, a bright red sun with a human face and a third eye embodies both vital energy and consciousness. Coloured rings surround it, accentuating its spiritual presence. The roots, clearly visible at the bottom of the canvas, link all the forms to the earth, evoking the interconnectedness of living things. This dense, esoteric, organic work is part of a cyclical, animist vision of existence.
