The Birth of Venus by Botticelli - Raoul Dufy
Excellent
The artwork in a nutshell
In this free reinterpretation of Botticelli's work, Raoul Dufy transposes a great classic of Renaissance painting into his own pictorial language, based on lightness of line, fluid colour and simplification of form. Rather than copying the original painting, he retains its structure and main characters, which he interprets with spontaneity. Venus is shown standing on a shell in the centre of the composition, surrounded on the left by the winged figures of Zephyr and his companion, and on the right by a woman holding a cloth. The bodies are drawn with fine, supple lines, sometimes only suggested, while the drapery and hair are rendered in long, coloured brushstrokes. The watery green and mauve background is treated in broad, transparent flat tints, evoking a stylized sea. The overall effect is fluid, almost dance-like, in keeping with the artist's decorative spirit.
