The Frame - Frida Kahlo
Excellent
The artwork in a nutshell
In this work, painted on glass, Frida Kahlo depicts herself head-on, her features sharp and her gaze fixed, in a style that is more naive than realistic. The painting echoes popular Mexican traditions, particularly through its unusual support and highly ornate symmetrical composition.
The artist's face, surrounded by a yellow floral crown, is framed by a multicoloured arch and bright floral motifs. Two birds in red, pink and yellow plumage rest on either side of her shoulders, adding a decorative and symbolic touch. The whole frame is saturated in bright colours - red, blue and yellow - reminiscent of Mexican handicrafts. The inscription ‘Le Cadre’ (The Frame) visible on certain reproductions and its folkloric style suggest a work designed to express a cultural identity as much as a self-portrait. This is the only painting by Kahlo acquired by the Louvre, and it remains a vibrant tribute to her Mexican roots.
