The gate - Raoul Dufy
Excellent
The artwork in a nutshell
In the 1930s, Raoul Dufy moved towards a more decorative and structured style of painting, with a strong emphasis on ornamental motifs. ‘The gate’ illustrates this interest in architectural elements treated as subjects in their own right. This is not a simple landscape detail, but a graphic exploration of an ironwork motif, worked for its own sake.
The painting shows a wrought-iron gate painted blue, occupying almost all the space on the canvas. Behind it is a dense, green garden and a red brick building. The composition is based on symmetrical arabesques and volutes, underlined by black lines. The palette is vivid, with marked contrasts between blue, green and red. The shapes are flattened, with no marked perspective, and the architectural details are stylised. The main subject here becomes an ornamental motif, treated with precision and graphic richness.
