The Love Embrace of the Universe, the Earth (Mexico), Myself, Diego, and Señor Xolotl - Frida Kahlo
Excellent
The artwork in a nutshell
Frida Kahlo painted this work in 1938, at a time when she was beginning to receive international recognition, thanks in particular to the support of André Breton and the Julien Levy gallery in New York. The painting evokes themes that are omnipresent in her work: death, childhood and Mexican traditions. Here, she takes her inspiration from the Día de los Muertos, a popular Mexican festival that celebrates the dead with offerings, masks and colourful symbols.
The scene shows a little girl standing on dry ground, wearing a pink dress. She holds a yellow flower in her hands, a symbol of life or offering. Her face is covered by a white mask depicting a skull and crossbones, with deep-set eyes rimmed in gold. At his feet, another mask lies on the ground, grotesque and frightening, with a protruding tongue and wide-set eyes. The background shows a cloud-laden sky and a snow-capped mountain range, lending a tense atmosphere of childlike innocence and confrontation with death.
