The Potato Eaters - Vincent Van Gogh
Excellent
L'œuvre en bref
In The Potato Eaters, Van Gogh returned to his Dutch roots to paint an authentic genre scene. Here, the artist depicts the simplicity of peasant life, in brown, earthy tones that recall the toil of the land.
Five figures in modest clothes share a plate of potatoes around a table lit by a hanging lamp. Their emaciated faces and rough hands, depicted in broad brushstrokes, bear witness to the harshness of their lives. Nevertheless, the warmth of the home that emanates from the scene conveys a sense of unity and solidarity. In this work, Van Gogh invites us to contemplate humanity in its purest expression, far removed from the pomp of the city and modernity.
