L'œuvre en bref
With The Vase, Fernand Léger continued his exploration of everyday objects treated according to a construction inherited from Cubism. The subject of still life became a field for formal experimentation, where volumes were simplified and integrated into a rigorous architecture. The artist did not seek to recreate a realistic space, but rather to organise the surface by juxtaposing coloured planes and sharp lines. The central object is thus absorbed into a structured geometric system.
In the centre, a large brown vase occupies the height of the composition, cut by vertical black and white stripes. Around it, rectangular and curved shapes interlock: on the left, a blue and white wavy element; on the right, a semicircle and flat areas of green and orange. The colours are applied in smooth, uniform surfaces. The contours are precise, without any marked modelling. The whole rests on a strict balance between verticals, horizontals and curves, creating a stable, frontal image.
