In his later works, he moved away from the pure naturalism of the Impressionists to a more personal style that often incorporated elements of Symbolism and Neoclassicism.
Caillebotte was born into a wealthy family in Paris in 1848. His father was an architectural engineer and he initially followed in his footsteps by studying at the École des Beaux-Arts. However, he soon abandoned his studies to devote himself fully to painting.
Gustave Caillebotte was a French painter who was one of the first to paint modern life in an urban setting. His most famous paintings are The Bridge of Europe, which depicts a busy Parisian street scene, and The Floor Scrapers, which depicts workers refinishing a floor. Caillebotte's work is characterised by its high level of detail and its realistic depiction of everyday life. Although he is not as well known as some of his contemporaries, Caillebotte's work had a lasting influence on subsequent generations of artists.
Caillebotte was passionate about boating and was a member of the Paris Sailing Club, which was based in Argenteuil. He was also a naval architect and a regatta sailor who marked his time by participating in races all over France.
