L'œuvre en bref
This work belongs to the period in the 20th century when Nicolas de Staël was interested in sporting scenes, particularly football. He attended several matches and sought to convey the energy of bodies in motion without resorting to descriptive representation. The subject allowed him to work on the fragmentation of forms and the balance between abstraction and recognition of the motif, reducing the figures to coloured masses organised in space.
The painting shows several players arranged against a horizontally divided background. The lower part is occupied by a large red area, evoking the pitch, while the upper part is painted in uniform blue. The footballers are constructed from irregular white, black, light grey and red blocks. The bodies are suggested by the assembly of rectangles and angular shapes, without anatomical details. The tilted and offset positions of the shapes give a clear reading of the movement and confrontation between the players.
