Regatta at Henley - Raoul Dufy
Excellent
The artwork in a nutshell
This work depicts a nautical event on the Thames, at the heart of a festive scene charged with British symbols. True to his love of regattas, Raoul Dufy combines observation and formal freedom in a lively composition that evokes sport, crowds and the emblems of a nation.
The painting is dominated by large red and blue flags, whose motifs take centre stage. Underneath, a multitude of rowers and sailing boats cross the water in fast, supple lines. On the banks, sketched figures and tents punctuate the décor. The colours are bright but transparent, with intermingling areas of green, mauve, red and blue. The absence of a realistic perspective reinforces the impression of abundance. Rather than freezing a precise scene, the work condenses the visual and festive elements of the regatta into a composite, decorative image.
