Regatta on the coast - Raoul Dufy
Excellent
The artwork in a nutshell
This work shows one of Raoul Dufy's favourite themes: regattas and gatherings of sailing boats by the sea. He used a visual language based on the repetition of shapes, the brilliance of colours and a free organisation of space, detached from any realistic perspective. The sea becomes a pretext for a rhythmic, festive composition.
The painting depicts a dense ensemble of sailboats, pennants, flags and masts, all set against an almost homogenous light-blue sea. The boats are stylised, reduced to a few coloured lines and surfaces. There are flags with a variety of motifs, a few highly schematised human silhouettes, and a very light treatment of the sky and waves. The colour is fluid, laid down in washes with transparencies. The overall effect is one of visual floating, where the maritime motif becomes a decorative game built around movement and repetition.
