The artwork in a nutshell
Raoul Dufy experimented with form and perspective, particularly under the influence of Cubism and Fauvism. ‘Le Jardin abandonné’ was one of those works in which he explored a more structured and angular approach to composition, moving away from traditional figuration. In it, he emphasised spatial organisation and the rhythmic effects created by line and colour.
The painting depicts a scene of vegetation and architecture rendered unrecognisable by the deconstruction of forms. Buildings, a green kiosk, trees and a bench can be made out, but these elements are fragmented and treated as oblique flat tints. The palette is full of contrasts: intense greens, luminous yellows, deep blues and touches of red. The brushstrokes are energetic, with black lines marking the contours. The overall effect is one of chaos, reinforcing the idea of a derelict place, caught in a tension between nature and architecture.
