The Saint-Henri tile factory - Raoul Dufy
Excellent
L'œuvre en bref
In the 1910s, Raoul Dufy moved away from his colourful, decorative compositions to explore a more structured language, influenced by Fauvism and emerging Cubism. This painting, devoted to an industrial landscape, illustrates his interest in urban and manufacturing scenes, far removed from the more familiar seaside representations in his work.
The painting shows a complex of red buildings, stretched out along a dark river, dominated by tall chimneys. The whole is painted in warm colours, mainly reds and ochres, contrasting with the deep greens and blues of the water. The material is applied in large, visible brushstrokes, the shapes simplified and surrounded by black lines. The slightly overhanging viewpoint and the absence of human figures reinforce the sensation of mass and industrial silence. The main subject here is industrial architecture, captured in its raw materiality.
