L'œuvre en bref
The Mona Lisa with Keys immediately surprises viewers with its juxtaposition of a universally recognised image and mechanical elements suspended in space. Fernand Léger does not seek to faithfully reproduce Leonardo da Vinci's famous portrait; instead, he integrates it into a system of shapes and signs that profoundly alter its interpretation.
On the right, the figure of the Mona Lisa appears recognisable, rendered in greenish and dark tones, isolated like an iconic fragment. On the left and in the centre, a set of keys, coloured circles, taut black lines and geometric shapes occupy the surface. The keys, rendered with a certain relief, seem to float above a lively background of yellow and grey clouds. The space is not constructed according to a classical perspective; it is organised by superimpositions and contrasts between clear flat areas and hazy zones.
This work reflects Léger's interest in the dialogue between ancient art and industrial modernity. As an heir to Cubism, he combines mechanical objects, cultural symbols and graphic abstraction. The Mona Lisa ceases to be an isolated portrait: she becomes one element among others in a dynamic composition, where circular shapes and straight lines structure the whole like a visual mechanism.
