Cubism is an art movement that began in the early 20th century. Cubist artists sought to break down objects and scenes into their individual components, or "cubes". They then rearranged these cubes to create new abstract forms and abstraction. Cubism had a profound impact on the development of modern art, and its influence is still visible in contemporary paintings and sculptures. While some critics initially described Cubist works as 'ugly' or 'unintelligible', they are now widely recognised as one of the most important achievements in early 20th century art.
Although they worked in different styles and artistic approaches, the paintings of Roger de la Fresnaye, Franz Marc and Paul Klee all share a sense of geometric abstraction. De la Fresnaye was influenced by Cubism and his paintings often feature strong horizontal and vertical lines. In contrast, Marc's work was characterised by bright colours and organic forms. Klee, on the other hand, used a variety of techniques to create his distinctive style, which has been described as "paintings within paintings". Despite their differences, all three artists were united by their willingness to experiment with form and push the boundaries of traditional painting. Among the most famous paintings of the Cubist movement are Paul Klee's Ballon Rouge, Roger de la Fresnaye's Married life and The conquest of the air and Franz Marc's The Tiger.
