L'œuvre en bref
This work is part of Nicolas de Staël's oeuvre in the 20th century, during a period when he focused on urban and river landscapes, particularly those of Paris. He painted familiar places, simplifying their structure without seeking architectural precision. The bridge, a stable and identifiable element, allowed him to organise the space using large flat areas of colour and horizontal lines, while maintaining a clear reading of the motif.
The painting depicts the Bercy Bridge crossing the Seine. The arches are suggested by rounded brown and grey shapes above the greenish water. In the foreground, the river occupies a large area, with a small light-coloured boat floating near the bank. On the right, a light-coloured area suggests the quay, while a dark boat is moored under the bridge. The sky is rendered in broad bluish and grey strokes, without precise details, reinforcing the construction through masses of colour.
