L'œuvre en bref
In this abstract painting, Nicolas de Staël tackles an architectural subject without offering a descriptive or monumental interpretation. Here, he focuses on the massive presence of a religious building treated as a single volume, almost closed in on itself. Architecture allows him to explore verticality, density and the relationship between light and darkness, reducing the motif to a construction of superimposed planes and thick surfaces.
The composition is dominated by a dark background occupying the upper part of the canvas. In the centre and in the lower half, a light mass stands out, constructed of white, cream and pale grey blocks. These rectangular shapes suggest walls, buttresses and stacked volumes. The brushstrokes are visible, applied in thick layers, with sometimes abrupt transitions. The whole is structured by the sharp contrast between the dark area of the sky and the luminous mass of the building.
