L'œuvre en bref
Nicolas de Staël takes his immediate environment, the studio, as his starting point, transforming it into an autonomous pictorial construction. Rather than describing a recognisable workspace, he extracts a few essential elements, treating them as simple volumes. The studio thus becomes a place of experimentation where he can organise verticality, depth and relationships between masses, without narration or functional precision.
The composition is dominated by a range of deep blues and greys, arranged in broad vertical bands. In the centre, a clear, massive shape stands out, suggesting a table or a piece of furniture. On this surface appear two dark, elongated elements, evoking tools or objects placed there. White and pale blue areas interlock around them, creating a dense, closed structure. The paint is applied in thick layers, with visible brush marks, reinforcing the construction through blocks and contrasts in value.
