L'œuvre en bref
In this abstract painting, Nicolas de Staël takes as his starting point a landscape in the south of France, which he reduces to a simple, frontal structure. The motif of the road allows him to organise the composition around a central axis, without seeking to represent an identifiable place. At this point in his work, he focuses primarily on conveying a sense of space and movement through the relationship between planes and colours.
The composition is built around a wide light band that crosses the painting from the bottom to the centre, suggesting the road. On either side, two dark and green masses evoke embankments or hills. The upper part is occupied by a pale, almost uniform sky. The shapes are large, with slightly irregular contours, and the paint is applied in thick layers. The whole is based on a simplified perspective, constructed by the convergence of planes towards a central point.
