L'œuvre en bref
During the 20th century, Nicolas de Staël developed a style of painting in which the motif gives way to pictorial construction. In this type of composition, he does not start with an identifiable subject, but organises the canvas through the tension between lines, surfaces and colours. This approach allows him to explore the balance between abstraction and structure, working directly with the material and the relationship between forms.
The canvas is dominated by a uniform grey background, on which angular and curved shapes interlock. White, black, bluish and dark green surfaces are delimited by bold contours, sometimes underlined with red lines. The shapes intersect and overlap, without traditional perspective. The paint is thick, marked by visible brushstrokes. The whole is constructed in irregular blocks, spread across the entire surface, with no clearly defined centre.
