L'œuvre en bref
In Nudes in the Forest, Fernand Léger immerses the human figure in a dense tangle of angular shapes and mechanical volumes. The bodies, almost unrecognisable, blend into a complex structure made up of cylinders, cones and interlocking facets. The cool palette—dominated by greens, greys, and blues—reinforces the compact, almost mineral atmosphere of the scene.
Created in the early 1910s, the work belongs to Léger's Cubist phase, but it stands out for its emphasis on volumetric power. The figures are not simply fragmented: they seem to be constructed like machines or architectural structures. The natural space of the forest disappears in favour of a structured universe, where man and the environment merge into a tight network of planes and geometric shapes.
